The Marmaray Tunnel, proposed in 1860 and completed in 2008, runs for 8.4 miles beneath the Bosphorus Straight, which separates the Asian and European sides of Istanbul. Two cars in motion speed toward us, their headlights and the lights of the tunnel blur and reflect off the slick asphalt.

The Cobweb Thistle (Cirsium occidentale) in bloom. The head of the thistle is covered in large spines, laced with thin, web-like fibers. The florets at the top of the flower head are covered in pollen, enticing insects brave enough to traverse the plant's many spines.
